This tool helps underwriters to better manage the
long tail nature of casualty business by increasing
their awareness of circumstances that have resulted
in large claims or significant court decisions.
Learning From Losses is an easy to use, indexed,
case-by-case review of claims, predominately
involving Canadian domiciled risks. Also included
are claims in other jurisdictions where the outcome
is material to Canadian underwriters.
Each analysis includes basic coverage information,
claim details and amounts, settlement particulars
and, where applicable, specific underwriting
insights.

The Commercial Umbrella Liability Policy is a key
element in the insurance program of almost every
commercial enterprise. Personal Umbrella coverage
has gained in popularity with individuals to protect
their own personal assets.
In today’s litigious legal environment, there is a
very real need for extensive liability coverage and
high limits. The Umbrella Policy, as a supplement to
a sound primary program, is an important part of any
liability insurance protection program.
This guide is intended to provide a practical and
basic understanding of underwriting Umbrella
Liability Policies. It does not pretend to be all
encompassing. A sound knowledge of primary General
Liability and Automobile underwriting is
pre-supposed. These skills are essential to the
understanding of what is required to provide
Umbrella Liability coverage successfully.
Flexibility, based on sound underwriting principles
is required to adapt the Umbrella Policy to suit the
varied needs of your insureds.

Long before "climate protection" and
"sustainability" became buzzwords familiar to the
general public, Munich Re recognised how important
it was to understand the geoscientific principles
and decided to set up a separate department to
conduct research in this field. Losses from geo
risks are increasing dramatically worldwide. Munich
Re has been researching geoscientific phenomena,
their risks and their loss potentials, since 1974.
Twenty-five staff now work in the Geo Risks
Research Department in our German Home Office,
covering all the pertinent disciplines like
meteorology, seismology, geology, geophysics, and
geography. They give advice and provide services for
all in-house departments and external users dealing
with issues related to natural catastrophes and
needing geoscientific knowledge.

Many
items of news from the gene laboratories are
fascinating, some frightening. Nobody knows what
direction research will take. One thing is certain,
though: the insurance industry will be one of the
branches of industry directly affected.
Futurologists now predict that the impact of
genetics and biosciences on the medicine, society
and the economy in the 21st century will be
enormous. However, like every development and every
advance, genetic engineering harbours its own new
risks. One of the most obvious and current risks is
the complexity of genetic engineering. The explosive
growth in knowledge engendered by genetic
engineering (doubling of knowledge every two years)
can only be contained if we have the necessary
expertise.
By bundling our knowledge in biosciences across all
classes of business, we contribute to the vision of
the Munich Re Group to be one of the leading risk
carriers and providers of financial services. In
addition, we strive to attain opinion leadership in
the field of genetic engineering within the
insurance industry.
